SIX YEAR OLD JASMINA ANEMA WAS DIAGNOSED WITH A RARE AND AGGRESSIVE FORM OF LEUKEMIA IN JANUARY 2009.
Her doctors determined her only chance for survival would be a bone marrow transplant and estimated that she would die within two months without one.
Finding a match for Jasmina was extremely difficult; being adopted (by a Caucasian mother who was not a match) with no full siblings, in addition to the fact that African Americans make up only 8% of the bone marrow registry, made the search that much more complex (since more than likely, the donor would have had to been another African American).
Amazingly, because of Jasmina's incredible story, and the devoted support of friends, family and strangers, over 10,000 people joined the bone marrow registry and two possible matches were found.
On June 11, 2009, Jasmina received her bone marrow transplant. Though this was wonderful news, in late September after a follow-up biopsy, we learned that her leukemia returned, leaving Jasmina to battle a number of serious complications.
AFTER A ROLLER COASTER OF UPS AND DOWNS FROM THE CHEMO SIDE EFFECTS, AND THE RETURN OF THE LEUKEMIA, JASMINA LOST HER COURAGEOUS BATTLE ON JANUARY 27, 2010.
BECAUSE OF JASMINAS AMAZING SPIRIT, DKMS ( the world's largest marrow donor center) GAINED OVER 10.000 REGISTRIES, and because of Jasmina, to date, have found FIFTEEN MATCHES for other bone marrow recipients, potentially saving their lives!
Jasmina was wise beyond her years and CREATED AWARENESS, stressing the need for African American donors, as this group is one of the most under represented.
Though Jasmina is no longer with us, she will forever be OUR ANGEL ON EARTH. She touched and mobilized so many, especially the ones who met her, including Rihanna, Kelly Rowland, Paul Pierce, Chris Wilcox, Jason Kid, Lil Mama, Governor Paterson and President Barack Obama.
Jasmina has been an inspiration to the world with her STRENGTH and WILL TO LIVE and by battling her illness with GRACE.
JASMINA YOU WILL BE MISSED, BUT YOU WILL SHINE ON US FOR EVER!
